I didn’t plan to launch another Kickstarter so soon after the All-Stars deluxe edition but sometimes the universe throws a spark you simply have to follow.
Since release day I’ve been asked the same question over and over: “When is the Spellcaster Wild Card audiobook coming?”
I wanted to give you a date. But behind the scenes, things looked grim. My agent told me there was zero chance of landing an audiobook rights deal. Not unlikely. Not a long shot. Zero.
And if you’ve read Spellcaster, you already know what a “zero chance” does to an underdog like Haylee… and to me.
It lights a fire.
So I made a decision. If no one else would produce this audiobook, I would.
And because this is Spellcaster Wild Card we’re talking about—chaotic magic, big emotions, competitions, vampires, wizards, werewolves, zombies, and all the mayhem in between—I couldn’t do it halfway. I had to either Go Big or Go Home.
My Dream Narrator
There was only one narrator I dreamed of reaching out to: Khaya Fraites, the powerhouse voice behind Violet Sorrengail in the Fourth Wing dramatized adaptations. She’s emotional. Fierce. Iconic. Everything Spellcaster needs.
I fully expected a gentle no. A “sorry, unavailable.” A “I only work through publishers.”
But that’s not what happened.
Khaya wrote back and said she’d love to narrate Spellcaster Wild Card!
Even better? She can begin February 10th.
I’m still floating somewhere above the stratosphere.
The Real Talk: Producing a 20+ Hour Audiobook
Here’s the part most people don’t see: audiobooks are expensive to produce (the longer, the higher the cost), and audiobook Kickstarters are notoriously challenging to fund. To make this happen, I need to raise at least half the production cost upfront.
That’s where the next piece of magic comes in.
